AGH University researcher a finalist of the Polityka Science Awards

Dr Daria Hemmerling from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering is one of the finalists of the 24th Polityka Science Awards.

Dr Daria Hemmerling is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering. She obtained her PhD degree in the field of biomedical engineering and biocybernetics, more specifically in the quantification of the quality of voice and speech for medical purposes. In her research, Dr Hemmerling has been focused on the analysis of various biomarkers for behavioural analysis, health monitoring, disorder detection and treatment monitoring, all on the basis of algorithms for computer voice processing, digital signal processing, and image processing. Her main specialisation is the development of software supporting the diagnostic process and identification of changes in the multimodal approach that may be difficult for the human eye to observe on a daily basis.

Currently, she is managing three projects, one of which relates to the monitoring and diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases with the use of sensors and display systems fixed onto augmented reality glasses. The second project concerns the analysis of biosignals for the purposes of affective computing and haptics in airspace. As of late, she has also been working on biosignals for the detection of heart failure based on facial and voice analysis.

She was awarded by the Federal Assistance Award financed by the U.S. Department of State, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the National Centre for Research and Development. She was also a fellow of the Ivey Business School in Canada.

The jury of the Polityka Science Awards selected the final 15 candidates out of 500 who represent humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, life sciences and technical sciences. Five of them will receive the main scholarships. Their names will be revealed in October.

Since 2001, the Polityka Weekly Foundation has been running a scholarship programme for young scientists called “Stay with us!” – since 2011 under the name Polityka Science Awards. The action carried out on the pages of Polityka promotes valuable career patterns and scientific achievements of young scientists in Poland. The Foundation is looking for people who have reached an important milestone in their professional lives in the last year or two. Their achievement could be a doctoral thesis, habilitation, book, important paper, completion or initiation of research, creating a team, and assumption of a significant function in a scientific institution.
