Summary of the season, congress, and gala of academic sports

The Academic Sports Association (AZS) Gala saw the medallists of the Paris Olympics, this year’s World University Championships, and European Universities Games, representatives of higher education institutions in Poland, and Minister of Science and Higher Education Dariusz Wieczorek. The event culminated in the AZS University Congress dedicated to the current situation of academic sports and possible ways for its development.

In the final ranking that concluded the 2023/2024 season, the AGH University took third place with 2029 points in the general classification and second place in the technical universities category.

The AGH University Rector, Professor Jerzy Lis, expressed his satisfaction and congratulated the athletes:

“My sincere congratulations to all our sports sections, coaches, staff and, above all, the players and athletes! You have achieved wonderful results this season! A round of applause for you! At the same time, I would like to thank you, athletes, for creating such a tight and ambitious community at the AGH University. We are extremely enthusiastic about the fact that each year new members join our sports sections, who not only practice sports professionally, but also do it for their own health and fun. I am delighted that our new sports hall, opened last year, is a place that fosters passion for sports and healthy rivalry as well as a training ground for talented athletes. Kudos to the entire AGH University Academic Sports Association! It is also worth mentioning that from this year on, we are even more focused on sports at the AGH University. Candidates for AGH University programmes with certain sports achievements may obtain additional points in the application process. Young accomplished athletes may develop their talent here with us!”

As usual at the Sports Gala, the universities in the top positions in the general and medal classifications of the Polish Academic Championship (AMP) series were presented with awards. In the medal classification, the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice took first place, while the overall classification was dominated by students from the Gdansk University of Technology who outperformed the University of Warsaw and the AGH University.

Olympic medallists from Paris who represent AZS clubs on a daily basis were also honoured during the Gala. Special awards were presented to a large group of World University Championships medallists. Awards were also given to students who earned medals at the European Universities Games.

The AZS University Congress took place on 23–24 October 2024 in Warsaw.
