AGH University researchers part of Polish, Ukrainian, and American cooperation

AGH University researchers are to obtain funds from the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) for two projects they are going to implement in cooperation with researchers from the USA and Ukraine within the IMPRESS-U programme.

Decoupling Structure and Composition with Zintl Polymorphs

The research team will study materials (including thermoelectric, magnetic, and superconducting ones) that exhibit a wide range of functional properties, making them attractive to both applied and basic sciences. The project coordinator on the part of the AGH University is Professor Krzysztof Wojciechowski from the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics.

Sustainable intelligent software enhanced with parallel co-processors for future high-energy physics experiments

The cooperation is aimed to ensure sustainable development of technology in high-energy physics while respecting data ethics and caring for the environment. The AGH University team, coordinated by Professor Tomasz Szumlak from the Faculty of Physics and Applied Computer Science, will deal with sustainable development of scientific software, which is key to ensuring accuracy, reliability, and sustainability in research. Maintaining the continuity of research by means of complex documentation and knowledge transfer is essential in preventing the loss of critical expertise. Dr Tomasz Bołd from the Faculty of Physics and Applied Computer Science, who also participates in the works, intends to explore how to make more efficient use of the large amount of data that will be generated in projects carried out on the HL-LHC (High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider).

The IMPRESS-U Programme (International Multilateral Partnerships for Resilient Education and Science System in Ukraine) was established by an agreement of grant organisations from six countries: USA (U.S.NSF, NASEM), Ukraine (NRFU), Poland (NAWA, NCN), Estonia (ETAG), Latvia (LCS), and Lithuania (RCL). The purpose of the initiative is to foster excellence in scientific and application research, education, and innovation by means of collaboration and integration of researchers from Ukraine with the global community. As part of the partnership, the U.S. NSF. seeks proposals for joint ventures carried out by researchers from the USA, Ukraine, and at least one partner country. The most attractive projects are the ones which increase the effectiveness within international partnerships, support academic staff, and contribute to the creation of a modern ecosystem of research, education, and innovation in Ukraine.

NAWA is responsible for international supplements, which entails the expansion of ongoing research projects funded by the U.S. NSF with new components and partnerships with Ukrainian and Polish researchers.
