The AGH University has been once again included in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), compilation of the best world universities, also known as the Shanghai List.
Eight Polish universities were listed in the ranking. These are: Jagiellonian University, University of Warsaw, Gdańsk University of Technology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Warsaw University of Technology, and Wroclaw Medical University.
The top 10 was dominated by American universities (top three: Harvard, Stanford, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Cambridge and Oxford came in respectively fourth and sixth.
The ARWU is one of the most prestigious university rankings. It is compiled on the basis of six indicators, including the number of alumni and staff who have received a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, the number of authors of the most cited scientific papers, the number of articles in Nature and Science journals, and data on the university’s publication output in selected Web of Science™ databases: the Science Citation Index Expanded™ and the Social Sciences Citation Index™.
Over 2,500 universities are taken into consideration in the evaluation process, of which only 1,000 gets mention in the ranking. The exact place on the list is known only for the top 100 universities, whereas the remainder is classified in groups of 100.
