The Scientific Council for the Strategic Development of Małopolska was inaugurated mid-2021. The bilateral agreements signed at that time in Krakow's Sukiennice and further meetings with the rectors of Małopolska's higher education institutions created a strong foundation for long-term cooperation between the Małopolska region and the region's higher education institutions. It was the first such initiative in Poland.
The new chair was elected during a session of the Council that took place on 28 August 2024 under the lead of Łukasz Smółka, Marshal of the Małopolska Region.
